Gemini IV was the second manned space flight in NASA's Project Gemini. It launched on June 3rd, 1965 with Command Pilot Jim McDivitt and Pilot Ed White. McDivitt and White circled the Earth 66 times in four days, making it the first United States flight to approach the five-day flight of the Soviet Vostok 5. The highlight of the mission was the first EVA (space walk) by an American, during which White floated free outside the spacecraft, while tethered to it, for approximately 20 minutes. Both of these accomplishments helped the United States overcome the Soviet Unions' early lead in the Space Race.
Both these flags were inside the Gemini IV spacecraft during this mission and were witnesses to history! These are two of a number of flags McDivitt carried with him on this mission.
